What is Google Base? How do I set it up?

Google Base is a database. There are a handful of ways to use it but most Etsy users use it to get their products into Google's shopping results. This is another great way to increase your exposure.

Before you get started you need to set-up a Google Base account, which can be done here: www.google.com/base/

The following step-by-step instructions will automatically upload all of your Etsy items to Google Base. These instructions are probably the longest instructions I will ever post here -- If they are overwhelming I would suggest printing it out and checking off each step as you complete it. You will only have to do this once.

Note: If you have previous items in Google Base from manual uploads or from LetsEts, you need to delete these before you begin.
  1. Log into Google Base
  2. Click on the "Settings" tab
  3. Fill in your information. When entering your website address use the address with your shop number not your shop name.

  4. Follow these added steps only if you are not sure what your shop address is

    • a. Enter shopname.etsy.com into a browser (e.g., MagnetGames.etsy.com)
    • b. Press "return" on your keyboard
    • c. The website address in the browser should now be different.
    • d. Copy that address, it is what you should use for step 3.

  5. Click "Save Changes"
  6. Click the "My Items" tab
  7. Click the "Data feeds" tab
  8. Click the "New data feed" button
  9. Select your country
  10. For "Select the type of item in your data feed" select "Products"
  11. For "Select the type of the data feed you're registering" select "google base"
  12. Your data feed file name is your Etsy user name followed by .xml. Example: MagnetGames.xml
  13. Click the register data feed button
  14. Refresh the webpage
  15. Click blue text displaying "edit" right next to your xml name
  16. Change the File format to XML, all the other settings can be left the same
  17. Go to your Etsy shop and scroll down to the bottom right. Click "Subscribe to shop feed." Copy the address of the page
  18. Back on Google Base, click on "create" right next to "Schedule"
  19. Click daily, and then pick a time that will be happening in 1-2 hours from the current time (you can change this later)
  20. Paste the address you copied from step 16 into "Url of file." You can also choose how often you would like it to upload your items.
  21. Click "Update Schedule"

If you followed all of these instructions and you ended up with a "Failed" under recent uploads please post the failed message in the comments and I will be sure to help you get it all sorted out.

To set the time and frequency of your uploads follow these instructions:
  1. Log in to Google Base
  2. Click on "Data feeds"
  3. Click "edit" under uploads, it is right next to "Schedule"
  4. Choose the frequency, time, and timezone of your uploads.
  5. Click "Update Schedule"
Do you have another shop on Etsy? Follow these directions to set-up additional shops on Google Base.

Am I supposed to use the one with my store name, or numbers? It won't let me use the one with numbers, says ?/ aren't allowed.

  2. In step 11, you use your actual shop name. My shop name is MagnetGames, so my file was MagnetGames.xml

In step 3, you use the address with the number not the shop name.

Please let me know, if you are still getting errors ..

  3. Hi there. I found this after contacting Etsy with problems uploading feed correctly. I have followed this procedure several time. I do manage to get and active feed but it fails upload with the following details.
    Feed status details

Outcome: Data feed upload failed. No items are live. help
    Number of items processed: 0
    Number of inserted items: 0
Uploaded at: May 12, 2009 10:58 am CDT
Processed at: May 12, 2009 10:58 am CDT

In clicking on help I receive this page:
    Failure
This message is displayed when a data feed hasn't successfully processed or when no items in the feed were valid. Please make sure your feed is saved in one of our supported formats and try uploading it again.

Also, if you're trying to upload a compressed (.zip, .gz, .z, or .bz2) file, please make sure the file is compressed correctly, and that you're attempting to submit the feed in binary FTP mode (for users sending their feed via FTP). If the problem persists, please contact us.

I am not sure what I am supposed to do with it.

I previously did a manual posting of many of my Etsy items but not all, onto google base. I have not deactivated them (I was waiting to get the feed working). Could this be causing any conflict?

    I appreciate any help.

  4. Wow!

Manual updates should not cause a problem with the scheduled uploads as long as they are not the same.

Have you tried using my steps? I would just start over from the beginning -- follow each step .. if it still is giving you errors please contact me again.

    Good Luck!

  5. Hi,
I'm new to Etsy, with just one sale, so far. Yippee!!, so I'm exploring Google Analytics and Base, hoping it'll help with traffic and eventual sells. I've printed off your G-Base instructions, but I'm already stuck on step #2...what the heck is my shop number, and how do I find it? My shop name is shocdesigns.etsy.com. Thank you for your assistance.
    Regards,
    SHOC.

  6. Enter shocdesigns.etsy.com into your browser and hit your "return key"

The address should now be different at the top, showing an address with a number instead. Copy and use that address.

  22. Hi,

Having a problem getting this to work:

Re: "Change the encoding settings to UTF-8 and change the File format to XML, all other settings can be left the same"

I don't seem to have the option to do both. If I choose XML, then I am not given the option of UTF-8. In this case, I get an error message that says "We didn't understand some of the XML formatting in your file ..." see last part of http://www.handmadefusedglass.com/blog/how-to-get-your-etsy-shop-in-google-base/

The only way to have the UTF-8 encoding option is if I select File Format = autodetect, i.e. - no tXML. When I do that I get a error saying "didn't understand delimiter".

    What am I missing? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi,

I am sorry about that, I recently updated the instructions because some people were having trouble getting it to autodetect their file as XML .. so choose XML and don't worry about the encoding, I will edit the instructions.

Thanks so much for your comment!

  25. Hi Ilena,

If you want to set-up a google base for another shop you need to create another google base account. You cannot just create another feed on the same account since all feeds from an account have one main website. If you do not already have a separate e-mail for your second shop I would create a new one .. then just follow the same instructions for your new shop.

    Good luck!

    susan.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ps if you really wanted them on the same account, you could create a multi-client account .. there are details here: http://base.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=29893

  44. Hi Lori,

Possibly, if you click the help link next to your errors it should give you a specific reason why. This is what google says about symbols: "Use Standard Spelling and Grammar. Avoid any repeated and unnecessary use of punctuation, capitalization or symbols. Don't use exclamation points in your item titles. The use of symbols, numbers, and letters should adhere to the true meaning of the symbol."

When I change the file format to XML, the option to choose UTF-8 under Encoding disappears. If I want to choose UTF-8, I have to use Autodetect for the file format. Do you know which combination of settngs is correct?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hey Guys,

It can take up to 24 hours to process your scheduled time. Make sure your scheduled time is set to daily at least until it first uploads.

If you log into google base and look in the last upload status column what does it say? If there is no date there then that means it has not tried to upload yet. Try setting your scheduled date and time to an hour from now.

    susan.

ps deshawn marie, I am not going to reply to your email since I mostly answered your question here -- if you would like more details through email please let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  62. What does this mean?
    "Missing recommended attribute: weight"?

    ReplyDelete
  63. The way etsy has your rss feed set-up does not include any information about your product (other than new or used) -- so google has no idea what the product is. Weights tell google what the product isl color, size, type .. etc. These are not required. Your uploads will still process fine. You can add them by hand be going into each item -- but note that these updates are lost once a new uploaded finishes.
